In the summer of 2001, representatives of several organizations formed a consortium to plan and implement projects to understand and preserve the history of San Felipe de Austin--the capital of Stephen F. Austin's Colony. Because of the burning of the town site in 1836, historical archeology is a key element to these projects. Other projects to be pursued include gathering of archival and historical information, historic preservation planning for post-1836 structures within the town site, developing on-site interpretation of Austin Colony history, and development of heritage tourism opportunities.
Participants: Members of the consortium include:
Town of San Felipe: Mayor Bobby Byars
Stephen F. Austin Park Association: Florence Sims, President
Austin County: County Judge Carolyn Bilski
Austin County Historical Commission: Grace Holtkamp, Chair
Fort Bend Museum Association: Michael Moore, Director
Sealy Chamber of Commerce: Peggy Spradley, Director
The Fort Bend Museum Association, a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation, serves as fiscal agent and managing partner.
