General Information: Programs begin after 9 a.m. and are scheduled Tuesday through Friday from September through May. (Groups may book programs during the summer and special summer history programs are available for individuals.)
The program fee includes three programs lasting 30 to 45 minutes each with 15-20 students in each program. Maximum group size is 150; larger schools may call for alternative scheduling.
Program fees: $4 per student, with one free adult per 10 students; additional adults pay $5
Museum Gallery Tour | Why did early settlers choose to leave their homes and come to Texas? A tour guide leads this interactive presentation using museum exhibits and artifacts, helping students explore the settling of Texas from the perspective of Stephen F. Austin's American colonists.
Textiles in Texas | How was children's clothing made almost 200 years ago? Students will learn about spinning cotton and wool, weaving fabric and making quilts. They will practice ginning and carding cotton.
Digging into the Past | Students encounter archeology and delve into our community's history by learning the basics of archeology, viewing artifacts and taking part in a simulated dig.
Long-Smith Cottage | Students will tour this historic 1840s home containing several items belonging to Jane Long. They will gain an understanding of the differences between an early urban home and houses of today.
One Room Schoolhouse | What was school like 100 years ago? Learn the differences between the schools of today and schools from the past. Students will participate in lessons (including handwriting, music and more) in our one room schoolhouse, held on the second floor of the historic Moore Home.
Chore Time | Take part in doing daily chores as children did in the late 1800s including drawing water, washing clothes, churning butter and shelling corn.
Victorian Games | Learn about and practice the games of Stilts, Hoops and Graces.
Offsite Programs (These may be booked alone or in combination with the programs above.) :
Richmond Walking Tour | During this guided walking tour of historic Richmond, students will encounter historic buildings such as the 1896 Richmond Jail, the 1901 Depot, the McFarlane House and more.
The Morton Cemetery Tour | One of the oldest cemeteries in the state provides an excellent opportunity to learn about our local history. A tour guide will lead students on a stroll through the grounds and will point out the final resting places of some Texas legends, including Jane Long and Mirabeau B. Lamar.
Outreach Programs | Some programs can be adapted for presentation at your school. Let us know your needs and interests.
