On September 20, 2008 from noon until 5 p.m., Fort Bend County residents will have the opportunity to learn about the diverse heritage of our community and state. This year, the event is expanding to cover not only Hispanic heritage, but also the Czech and German heritage societies. Activities will include music, traditional folkloric dancing and children's activities--including a scavenger hunt and jalepeno- and watermelon-eating contests.
For the past 13 years, the Fort Bend Museum has worked with the local community to present the Fiestas Patrias Festival. This free family event commemorates the day when Father Hidalgo y Costillo's cry for liberty--el Grito de Dolores!--called for an end to Spanish tyranny in Mexico and started the movement for Mexican independence. In 1825, the 16th of September (Diez y Seis de Septiembre) was declared the national Independence Day. It is still celebrated all over Mexico and in U.S. Hispanic communities.
